Suicide Prevention

Education, intervention and awareness.

Suicide Prevention Vision: To prevent suicide through education, intervention, and awareness. Oklahoma ranks 12th in the nation for deaths by suicide. HeartLine works towards their suicide prevention vision by:

  • Answering the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 24/7, 365 days a year
  • Offering our HELP youth suicide prevention program to the Oklahoma City metro area
  • Providing HALT, an online course for caregivers of the elderly

Risk Factors:

  • Mental Illness
  • Substance Abuse
  • Recent Loss
  • Societal/Peer Rejection
  • Depression

Warning signs:

  • Talking or joking about death
  • Giving away prized possessions
  • Significant changes in behavior
  • Increased alcohol or drug use
  • Withdrawing from friends/family
  • Lack of interest in regular activities
  • Discussing suicide plan
  • Increased hostility and aggression

How can you help?

  • Tell them about 1-800-273 TALK(8255)
  • Contact a mental health care professional
  • Call 911 for a wellness check
  • Never leave someone at immediate risk alone
