Christmas and Holiday Assistance

Christmas assistance…? Are we already receiveing calls for holiday assitance?

Due to difficult economic times, demand for holiday help is expected to be extremely high this year. Local nonprofits, faith-based organizations and community partners are coming together to distribute holiday joy for those in need for 2012.

Last year, HeartLine gave out 4,745 referrals for 111 different agencies for programs ranging from holiday community meals, food boxes and pantries for Thanksgiving and Christmas, to holiday gifts and adoption programs for children and families.

Christmas Connection, an agency that treats those in need with dignity and respect, is one of HeartLine’s top referrals for holiday assistance. Of the 4,745 referrals, 1,440 callers were referred to Christmas Connection  for  holiday assistance. Although some may think that Christmas comes around only once a year, Christmas Connection offers Oklahomans the spirit of giving all year round with their School Supply program, Disaster Response program, Senior First program and Household Goods program.

Now is a great time to start planning for the holidays and connecting to resources in your area. To find holiday and Christmas resources in your area, call 2-1-1 or search our  2-1-1 database online.

Hi Melody, there a few different resources available that may be able to help with Christmas. First you can call 2-1-1 to see if there are any programs with openings right now. If they are full, you can keep checking weekly to see if new funding comes in. Also, you can register at the toys-for-tots website to be considered for recieving toys. Lastly, you can call churches near year and see if they are offering assitance. Some churches will help a few local families and do not wish to be listed in our 2-1-1 database.

It is so disheartening to have to ask for help but for my son, I am willing to do this. You see, I have a car but due to promises broken by the dealership I bought it from, I haven’t been able to get it registered or have the title put in my name. It has sat for so long that this summer, the passenger windows shattered when I closed the driver’s side door. Neighborhood children also have decided it’s a playtoy and cracked the windshield and gone through it looking for valuables. Ha ha on them…nothing valuable to anyone but me.

I thought even though we’ve not been able to go to the doctors or get to the store when we need to, that my 18 year old was doing just fine with things as they are. Seems he’s been keeping things from me. He’s not doing all that well in his senior classes…and a lot of that is because he’s unable to stay after school or come in early to talk to his teachers and/or get extra help. In addition, he hasn’t told me about the supplies he needs for classes because he knows we don’t have much money and we couldn’t get to the store anyhow. It breaks my heart. He never complains and willingly walks to the few places he needs or wants to go to. He keeps so much to himself, not wanting me to worry when he thinks I have enough to worry about.

I’ve tried to save the money, but with Social Security and child support as my only income, I have enough to pay my bills with a little extra, but it’s just not possible. I do editing for a friend of mine who is writing a book but the money doesn’t come in til the book is done. I’ve asked for help in every place I can and my family in Minnesota simply cannot afford to help. I’ve even gotten offers to help but it’s always the same…fraudulent money orders and cashiers checks. How people can defraud those asking for help, I’ll never know.

So, I’m not asking for this money for Christmas. It would be enough to simply get the money to get my car back on the road. The amount gets higher every day and right now, it’s at almost $1200 ($1000 for registration, etc, $200 for the down payment to get insurance started. I’ve done my figuring and I can afford insurance, etc after I get it legal). I’ll still have to drive with 2 broken windows but really, I just wouldn’t care. It would be Christmas every time I could say yes to my son when he wanted to go to the library or to the store when he needed something for a class project or even to say yes! I can pick you up late at school or ‘Hey! Let me give you a ride to your friends’. How I would even love to be able to take us to a doctor’s appointment or to the grocery store! I would feel like the richest girl in the world and so much more like a mom than I do now.

Thank you for reading this and even if you can’t help financially, send a prayer or two our way.

I am a single mother with 3 kids.Have been through experienced so much as a child till my adult life.My kids are my life and all I would like is to give them a Christmas that they deserve.I had nothing growing up and as an adult I have allowed myself to be part of a violent relationship which my kids saw. All I want is to see them be kids and smile.Because they deserve what I haven’t been able to provide.I provide the things we need but its hard to provide the things that they want and deserve. So any help for Christmas would be greatly apprietiated. Thanks
